The long-awaited trailer for ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ hit the Internet yesterday (July 18), as the the global icon celebrated his 95th birthday.

Britain’s finest Idris Elba and Naomie Harris star in the Justin Chadwick-directed biopic that captures the life and legacy of the former South African president.

Elba is already rumoured to be in line for an Oscar for his performance, which spans Mandela’s extraordinary life, from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected President of South Africa.

According to The Hollywood Reporter,  the United Nations General Assembly screened parts of the film on Thursday as part of celebrations of Nelson Mandela International Day. Notable attendees included former U.S. President Bill ClintonRev. Jesse Jackson; singer and civil rights icon Harry Belafonte; U.N. General Assembly president John William Ashe; and Ban ki-moon, secretary-general of the U.N.
