As the success of Emmerdale continues to grow, we are looking for a Story Editor to join our busy hard working team, ensuring that every single one of our episodes each year remains top quality entertainment that truly grips the audience.

This role entails…

Emmerdale are looking for an experienced and ambitious Story Editor to join the team,  supporting the Story Producer and Producers in creating and delivering compelling and dynamic storylines.

The Story Editor will join our editorial team, helping to create and produce storylines to the highest standards. 

Your main role will be to support the Story Producer in planning the block of stories during the story conferences, leading story talk throughs with the wider team and ensuring that stories meet the Producers brief. You will need to step up into the Story Producer role to cover holidays and you will be responsible for compiling episodes to present to the producer, often working to tight deadlines. You are responsible for calculating and approving cast holidays and will work closely with the script department to ensure continuity across the programme.

In return, you’ll get to work with a brilliant team and be part of an institution, helping to create unmissable drama. Emmerdale commissions in excess of 322 episodes per year and thus require long and unsociable hours. 

What do I need to get this role/job?

Minimum criteria 

  • Experience and  thorough understanding of working on a continuing drama – being able to cope with the demands and pressures of such a high-profile show with the ability to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the production process.
  • Demonstrable ability of creating and  editing storylines.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing and mentoring creative teams and in particular of leading a story team.
  • Proven experience of creativity and developing original ideas.
  • Knowledge and understanding of production, adhering to the constraints and limitations of production.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to produce clear, concise episodes with the ability to adhere to the Emmerdale house style. 
  • Demonstrate a passion for Emmerdale.

Key Criteria:

  • To prepare, write, compile and edit the storyline documents, working alongside the Story Producer to ensure that storyline documents are completed and delivered to agreed deadlines and to the highest standard.
  • To ensure that storylines take full account of all the implications of the Emmerdale production process.
  • To attend story conferences and work closely with the Producers and the Story Producer in steering discussions.
  • To supervise the preparation of other story-related material such as long-term story documents, character biographies and other strategic documents.
  • Excellent team management skills, including strong communication skills and the ability to drive and inspire.
  • Ability to meet changing and constant deadlines.
  • Confidence to pitch and develop story ideas at conference, chair story meetings and lead talk-throughs.
  • Ability to manage time effectively whilst dealing with changing priorities.
  • Ability to motivate and nurture the story team.
