Something Special’s Jin Woo Hwang on why Netflix is skewing South Korean TV

BBC Studios-owned UKTV recently commissioned a UK version of South Korean comedy gameshow Battle in The Box for its channel Dave, based on a format from Seoul-headquartered Something Special.

The latter, which bills itself as Korea’s first format production agency, was launched in 2020 by former CJ ENM formats chief Jin Woo Hwang and SBS/FormatEast alumna InSoon Kim.

Hwang, whose production and development credits include Better Late Than Never, I Can See Your Voice and Top Gear Korea, spoke with Ed Waller about the growing popularity of the country’s content around the world and why, despite Netflix being responsible for much of the attention, he believes the US streamer has now become too dominant.
