CBBC Ties With CBC For K-pop Drama

Canadian indies Pillango Productions and Aircraft Pictures land series

CBBC has tied with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) for the first time to co-commission a K-pop inspired drama series from Canadian indies Pillango Productions and Aircraft Pictures.

The 10 x 30-minute Gangnam Project is a tween dramedy set in South Korea, with an original K-pop soundtrack. It follows a Canadian/ Korean teen who, with dreams of becoming a K-pop star, accepts a job as an English teacher in South Korea to work at an elite K-pop training school.

The series is inspired by aspects of producer Sarah Haasz’s life and the original soundtrack is composed August Rigo, who has written songs for K-pop group BTS, Justin Bieber and One Direction.

The co-showrunners and exec producers are Pillango’s founder Sarah Haasz (Circuit Breakers) and Romeo Candido (The Next Step). Aircraft’s co-founders Anthony Leo and Andrew Rosen will also executive produce along with Cottonwood Media’s David Michel. The series will be directed by Romeo Candido, Justin Wu, and Gloria Kim.
