Industry Figures Highlight Role Of Race In TV Crime Stories

A panel made up of documentary makers and families of murder victims have decried the impact a victim’s race can play in the stories that get told by TV and the media.  

Mina Smallman, whose daughters Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman were murdered in a London park in 2020, was among the speakers at an RTS event on televising violence against women and girls.

She spoke out about how her family’s story was not picked up in the press or by producers in the same way they do when a white woman is murdered. Smallman is also the subject of last year’s BBC2 documentary Two Daughters.
