BBCS launches EastEnders writing scheme

Continuing drama-focused initiative announced at Series Mania.

BBC Studios has launched an EastEnders-oriented creative talent scheme aimed at writers looking to pursue a career in continuing drama.

The BBC Studios TalentWorks Writers’ Studio: EastEnders is an open script call for submissions to shortlist eight writers who will each write a paid trial script with the full support of the in-house development editor. Of this group, up to five commissioning slots will be available on the main show.

The scheme was unveiled by Kate Oates, head of drama productions at BBCS, at Series Mania in Lille today. Submissions are now open for the scheme, which closes on 22 April.

BBCS has developed the initiative amid a shake-up of its continuing drama roster – signposted by the cancellation of Doctors late last year, a decision which has seen plenty of backlash in the industry. The corporation has successfully rebooted Waterloo Road and recently launched a writing scheme for long-running continuing drama Casualty.
