Directors UK sounds alarm over Bafta nominee gender split

Women under-represented in directing categories despite interventions.  

Nominees for director categories in the Bafta TV Craft Award reflect “a real problem at the heart of the industry” regarding female representation, Directors UK has contended. 

With nominations published yesterday, out of the three director categories, which includes factual, fiction and multi-camera, the percentage split of female to male directors was 28% vs 72% – just under three men for every woman. It is understood that these figures are in line with the entries submitted.  

Across the three categories, Gesbeen Mohammad, Julia Knowles and Nikki Parsons were the only female directors to receive nods. In the Director: Fiction category, the nominees are entirely male.  

“If there are not enough programmes made by diverse directors to put forward that is a problem,” Directors UK stated.  

“If there is a reluctance from production companies submitting projects by underrepresented directors, that is also a problem.”
