David Dehaney: ‘We’re just beginning to grow up’

Proper Content has bucked the industry trend in the past year, with turnover doubling and is now setting his sights on returnable popular factual.

Proper Content is at a turning point. Amid the doom and gloom of the commissioning slowdown, the indie behind Channel 5’s Suicidal: In Our Own Words has managed to not only grow, but to more than double its turnover in the past year, from £1.98m to £4.15m.

In doing so, it has bucked an industry-wide trend – growth was generally confined to the larger end of the market in 2023, with the big scripted indies such as Sister and Bad Wolf experiencing surges in turnover while smaller firms stagnated or shrunk.

The producer, which made its name through eye-catching one-off or limited series docs including Bafta-winning The School That Tried To End Racism (C4) and The Changemakers (Paramount+), is changing tack and looking to add popular factual returnable brands to its slate. In doing so, it has managed to clinch a medical series with a major broadcaster.
