BBC natural history titles boost UK economy by £16m

Bristol-focused report reveals regional and wider value of tentpole programmes.

Landmark BBC natural history titles Wild Isles and The Green Planet helped generate more than £16m for the UK’s economy, according to a report from the corporation.

The BBC1 blue-chip series contributed a combined £16.4m gross value added (GVA) to the UK’s economy, the BBC Bristol Economic Impact Report found, with Silverback Films’ 2023 title Wild Isles injecting an estimated £9m GVA, and BBC Studios Natural History Unit’s (NHU) 2022 title The Green Planet contributing £7.4m.

The two programmes created “significant” economic value for the Bristol region and its local supply chain supporting over 80 and 50 full-time jobs respectively, the report added.
