BBC Discloses Over 300 Journalists in Exile Worldwide

Over 300 BBC journalists from the World Service are now working abroad, constituting approximately 15% of the total workforce of 2,000. This disclosure marks the first time the BBC has publicly acknowledged this figure, which has surged recently due to increased restrictions on press freedom in countries like Russia, Afghanistan, and Ethiopia. Many of these journalists had to relocate, leaving family members behind, to continue their work outside their home countries. For instance, BBC News Russian journalists and their families were relocated from Moscow to Riga, Latvia, in response to the Ukraine invasion. Presently, 39 staff members continue to report from Riga to global audiences in Russian, focusing particularly on combating misinformation about the conflict.
