Media Bill squeezes through House of Lords with day to spare

Proposed legislation set to win race against time to enter statute book.

The long-anticipated Media Bill has been rushed through the House of Lords this afternoon (23 May) after the general election announcement thrust its fate into the balance.  

The bill had reached the committee stage in the House of Lords on 8 May, but was not expected to pass through the final stages, including the report stage and third reading, until June.  

Instead, it has been pushed quickly through the second chamber and now just requires the formality of royal assent to enter the statute book. 

At close to 6pm, the House of Lords waved through the third reading with minimal amendments.
